NEW YORK, March 14 (UPI) -- A New York investment banker spent $3,500 on Girl Scout cookies to smooth over public anger at police for ticketing a man for selling them without a permit.

Ernie Dahlman, 35, of Dahlman Rose & Co., told the New York Post he made the gesture to reassure the girl, as a show of support for the police and to feed the hungry.

Gracemarie Louis' father Hoi was ticketed last week for selling Girl Scout cookies on a Brooklyn street without a permit.

Angry Post readers placed more than 200 cookie orders from the girl as a protest, but banker Dahlman saw it differently.

"There is no cop out there who says, 'I'm going to bust this guy for selling Girl Scout cookies,'" he said. "If I can show support of the cops and of a nice girl, that's great."

His order brought the girl's sales total to 1,800 boxes and Dahlman said he would donate the cookies to a food bank in the name of the New York City Police Department.
