A bylaw, passed unanimously, would impose a fine of up to $10,000 on businesses that continue pumping out smells after being told to stop.
The action came after complaints by condo owners, who had been lobbying council for months over smells wafting from the Arian, a nearby Persian restaurant, the CBC said.
Councilman Victor Durman said the council agrees that strong odors from the Arian have had a negative effect on their quality of life.
Arian owner Ali Bakhtiari said he's considering a legal challenge of the bylaw. He has said he's being singled out, calling the complaints "unjust and racist."
Under the bylaw, only two people need to make a written complaint in order for municipal officers to consider imposing a fine
