CARLISLE, England, March 2 (UPI) -- A Carlisle official wants to get rid of the "Cursing Stone," which has been blamed for causing biblical-style disasters since its arrival in the British town.

The 7.5 ton granite Cursing Stone and its 1,069-word curse arrived at Carlisle's Millennium Gallery in 2001.

Since then, the city has suffered a foot and mouth epidemic, mass layoffs, a huge fire and even some recent floods, The Sun reported Wednesday.

That prompted City Council member Jim Tootle to demand the stone either be moved out of Carlisle or destroyed.

"Some people may laugh but the curse should be taken seriously," Tootle told the newspaper.

The stone's curse has even been blamed for Carlisle United's woes on the soccer field.
