SEOUL, Feb. 27 (UPI) -- Pet owners who don't clean up after their pets in South Korean public parks may soon be required to pay a $99 fine.

The same fine would apply if the pets are left unleashed, the Korea Times reported.

The Ministry of Construction and Transportation says the new law would become effective in September if approved by the National Assembly.

Under the proposal, pet owners will be required to carry bags to dispose of their pets' waste in the parks. The new law is part of a recent move to implement an animal registration system in South Korea.
