Noisy children invade libraries

DETROIT, Feb. 24 (UPI) -- Detroit's libraries are attracting less of the silent crowd and more of the noisier kind, as some parents are using them as convenient day care centers.

Librarians and their patrons are complaining their quiet zones have been taken over by rowdy adolescents who fight, play loud music and damage the property, reports the Detroit News.

"I believe libraries are abused as baby-sitting centers, but it's what kids do when they get inside that matters," said one mother, who takes her three children, ages 11, 12 and 17, to the Southfield Public Library after school each day from 3 to 6 p.m. She sees the problem, but says her children are well behaved.

Southfield has hired police officers to keep order in its sparkling $36.8 million library. Oak Park, Roseville and Plymouth also have had problems with kids left at their libraries.

When school lets out across Metro Detroit, many students flock to libraries to wait for their parents.
