HOKKAIDO, Japan, Feb. 21 (UPI) -- Japanese authorities had been preparing a woman's body for a post-mortem examination when her heart began beating.

The 27-year-old unidentified woman, whose lifeless body was found near the Muka River in Hokkaido, was whisked to the hospital where she later regained consciousness and is reportedly making a recovery, the Mainichi Daily News reported Monday.

A paramedic who examined her body after it was discovered along the river had described her as unconscious, with no pulse or pupil movement and that rigor mortis appeared to have started.

A suicide note was discovered at the woman's home and an empty sleeping-pill bottle was found.

Nariyuki Hayashi, a professor at Nihon University, said apparent-death incidents were possible in low temperatures and that when a body is cold, the heart sometimes stops beating and the pulse can't be felt even though the person is alive.
