MADISON, Wis., Feb. 15 (UPI) -- Elvis Bogart Wales, a Welsh Corgi, yawned as his master lectured at a Mathematics Club in Madison, Wis., but the pooch already has an honorary math doctorate.

The dog achieved fame for demonstrating prowess in calculus that was recognized by his owner, mathematician Timothy Pennings, who teaches at Hope College in Michigan.

Pennings told the Madison Area Technical College math club how he solved an old calculus problem by watching Elvis fetch a ball thrown into the water from a Lake Michigan beach two years ago.

Elvis never swam directly to the ball. Time after time, he ran down the beach before jumping in seeking an optimal angle to the floating ball.

The dog figured out the quickest route to the ball, Pennings told the Wisconsin State Journal.

Pennings took three hours to figure out mathematically what Elvis had done and published a cover article "Do Dogs Know Calculus" in the College Mathematics Journal.

Hope College awarded the talented Corgi an honorary math degree.
