WHITTIER, Iowa, Feb. 10 (UPI) -- Jake the wild turkey died in Whittier, Iowa, crushed by the same vehicles he had chased from his territory for more than a year.

Jake became a road kill along the main drag where he had long guarded the integrity of his domain that included an enviable harem of hens, the Des Moines Register reported.

WMT radio in nearby Cedar Rapids solemnly broadcast on-air memorial services Wednesday, a week after Jake's mangled carcass was found.

His brutish behavior notwithstanding, Jake was a ladies' man all the way.

"He had a harem," said Bob Williams, who lives just north of town. "He would test you if you stopped. He'd be right up against your hubcaps, spreading his feathers in an intimidating display."

Jake's exploits had been widely reported from Texas to Germany, the newspaper said.
