Texas frying pan bests Shroud of Turin

PRAIRIE LEA, Texas, Feb. 2 (UPI) -- A Texas television station said Wednesday a resident of the Lone Star State has seen the image of Jesus etched in his frying pan.

KXAS in Fort Worth reported Juan Pastrano of Prairie Lea said he was cooking breakfast for his mother on the Lord's Day, Sunday, when he saw what appeared to be the face of Jesus etched in his frying pan.

Pastrano's family has yet to say if it plans to sell its sacred skillet.

A 10-year-old grilled cheese sandwich with the image of the Virgin Mary recently sold on eBay for $28,000.

Vandals lop off statue's penis

PENTICTON, British Columbia, Feb. 2 (UPI) -- A nude sculpture in Penticton, British Columbia, has lost its penis.

Vandals attacked the controversial statue Sunday, Curtis Collins, director of the Art Gallery of the South Okanagan, told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. Thursday.

"Some people don't enjoy the work of art," Collins said. "Going so far as actually destroying the work is another matter altogether."

Drivers had complained about the distracting nature of the nude and city officials had asked artist Michael Hermesh to cover its genitals.

It was unclear whether or not the missing part would be immediately replaced.

Collins said the material used in the original construction would not set in cold weather.

Cooking most favored as profession

HELSINKI, Finland, Feb. 2 (UPI) -- Finnish young people have ranked cooking as their No. 1 favorite profession.

Cooking was rated above that of youth work, law enforcement, photography and law among professions Finland's ninth graders favored as their prospective future careers in the poll by the Helsingin Sanomat newspaper.

In the poll, conducted by Suomen Gallup, the teens were asked to choose one or more professions from among 70 they might seriously consider.

Cooking was popular among both girls and boys.

Other professions in the list included childcare, cosmetologist, psychologist, teacher, hairdresser, flight attendant, artist, waitress, computer expert, engineer, metalworker, military officer and carpenter.

The least favorite professions among the 15-year-olds were dental assistant and postal worker.

Girls use bear spray to rob gas station

BURNABY, British Columbia, Feb. 2 (UPI) -- Three teenage girls in Burnaby, Canada, just couldn't contain their craving for chocolate, so they decided to rob a gas station just for the candy.

The three brandished bear spray and a metal pipe and fled with "a fistful" of chocolate bars, the Vancouver Province reported.

"Robbery is not funny," said Burnaby RCMP Cpl. Pierre Lemaitre. "It's just incredible. They wanted chocolate. That's it. I'm serious. No money was taken. It was just, 'Gimme the chocolate.' I've seen a lot, and I haven't seen one like this before."

Police said after the girls walked into the station, one of them displayed a metal pipe protruding from the back of her pants, while another held a can of bear spray.

"They told the clerk they had weapons," Lemaitre said. "They threatened him menacingly. There was no doubt in the clerk's mind that they meant business."

Two suspects, ages 16 and 17, were later arrested, and metal pipes seized. Police were looking for the third suspect.

Authorities don't believe they will be able to recover the stolen chocolate.
