NEW YORK, Feb. 2 (UPI) -- A 75-year-old New York City man faced criminal weapons charges Wednesday for allegedly attacking a homeless man with a sword embedded in his cane.

Witnesses told police the frail suspect, Eugene Carlson, was apparently angry George Devol, 30, was taking up most of the snow-covered sidewalk outside a church and refused to budge.

Witnesses called 911 when they saw Carlson disassemble his cane and brandish a 22-inch blade at Devol before plunging it into his neck.

"The old man was going to go after him again," a homeless man told the New York Daily News. "I had to get involved." The good Samaritan said he snatched the wooden cane and held Carlson until police arrived.

Devol was rushed to Bellevue Hospital and was in critical but stable condition Wednesday.

Carlson was charged with first-degree assault and criminal possession of a weapon, authorities said.
