TAMPA, Fla., Feb. 1 (UPI) -- A deputy in the Florida Attorney General's office was pepper-sprayed, beaten and robbed after calling an escort service that sent two women to his room.

Deputy Attorney General John Rimes was in Tampa on business when he was accosted by a well-dressed man who knocked at the door after the two women arrived Thursday evening, the St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times reported.

Rimes was hit with pepper spray, beaten and robbed of $500, police said.

The state official -- hospitalized until Saturday with a head injury -- was unable to provide the name of the escort service, but did remember the phone number. Tampa police said they want to find out who attacked the deputy attorney general, but are not in investigating why he called escorts.

A spokesman for Attorney General Charlie Crist said the state office also was investigating, although it was not clear what disciplinary action, if any, Rimes might face, the newspaper reported. Rimes is based in Tallahassee.
