ANN ARBOR, Mich., Dec. 17 (UPI) -- A homeless Michigan man who fell asleep in a dumpster in Ann Arbor survived a trip through a garbage compacter.

Bryan Weinert, program director of the Ann Arbor solid waste department, called the man's escape miraculous. Weinert told the Ann Arbor News that he may have been shielded by tough trash that is hard to compact.

The man was in a garbage bin behind a bar when its contents were picked up by a truck. The driver discovered he was inside the truck when he made his next stop.

Firefighters extricated the man from the truck.

Lt. Scott Robertson of the city Fire Department said he was unsure how the man survived.

"Just being in the Dumpster and being dumped would have been a heck of a ride, let alone being compacted," Robertson told the newspaper.
