LONDON, Dec. 17 (UPI) -- Consumer analysts say despite Britons' love of Asian foods, most of them still prefer their traditional fish and chips.

Mintel, a catering operation, said a recent survey found fish and chips beat out both Chinese and Indian food as the nation's favorite fare, the Scotsman reported Friday.

The survey also found that more than half of British residents have visited a "chippy" in the past three months.

"Although the British are renowned for their penchant for Indian and Chinese takeaways, it is in fact the good old British chippy which is considered a firm favorite amongst British diners today," said Linda Haden, Mintel senior catering analyst.

"The popularity of pubs and fish and chip shops just shows that there is still a real desire to eat British food."

Spanish and Portuguese Jews in the 16th century are believed to have introduced fish and chips to Britons.

Haddock has always been the most popular fish in Scotland, while the English have preferred cod, though pollock, skate and dogfish are making inroads as cod stocks diminish.
