YUMA, Ariz., Dec. 1 (UPI) -- It began two months ago with one pair of sneakers found slung over telephone lines in Yuma, Ariz. -- and now there are nine pairs and residents are dismayed.

No one knows why the sneakers were hung on the lines or who is responsible for the act, but residents in the neighborhood certainly want them gone soon, reports the Yuma Sun.

"I don't like them. I think they make the neighborhood look pretty ghetto ... it's already messed up as it is," says Jesus Mendivil.

Some residents have called the Arizona Public Service Co. and the city to have the shoes removed, but they are still there.

APS spokesman Mark Fallon in Phoenix said it's fairly common for people, especially children, to throw shoes over the lines. but the shoes don't pose a hazard.

"To patrol the lines and cut them down would take significant time," said Fallon. "Where we identify there's an issue, we cut them down."
