N.Z. parliament considers civil unions

AUKLAND, New Zealand, Nov. 29 (UPI) -- New Zealand's parliament is considering a measure that would legalize same-sex civil unions.

TV New Zealand said the measure -- know as the Civil Union Bill -- might be passed within two weeks and would give de facto legal recognition to same-sex relationships. It was reported back to parliament Monday.

The law would allow couples to register their relationships and receive the same legal rights and responsibilities that married couples have.

Opponents argue the bill will undermine marriage.

If passed, the bill would take effect April 26.
