Event organizers Robbie Gundelach, 21, and Chris Stafford, 25, and contestant Tony McGee, 22, were charged with cruelty to animals for the April 14 event at a pub in Brisbane's Exchange Hotel. Advertisement However, a lawyer for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals appealed to the judge the punishment was too small. "This was not an act of drunken bravado, but a calculated act to cause cruelty to animals," said lawyer Michael Byrne, who noted the maximum penalty was nearly $60,000 per person and two-year jail sentences. The men said the competition was based on the U.S. television show "Jackass" and offered a free vacation as first prize.
