BRISBANE, Australia, Nov. 29 (UPI) -- An Australian court fined three men $2,300 Monday for their roles in a contest of biting off the tails of live mice, The Australian reported.

Event organizers Robbie Gundelach, 21, and Chris Stafford, 25, and contestant Tony McGee, 22, were charged with cruelty to animals for the April 14 event at a pub in Brisbane's Exchange Hotel.

However, a lawyer for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals appealed to the judge the punishment was too small.

"This was not an act of drunken bravado, but a calculated act to cause cruelty to animals," said lawyer Michael Byrne, who noted the maximum penalty was nearly $60,000 per person and two-year jail sentences.

The men said the competition was based on the U.S. television show "Jackass" and offered a free vacation as first prize.
