BEIJING, Nov. 29 (UPI) -- Two hundred smart condom vending machines have been installed in entertainment venues, markets, apartment buildings in China.

The new machines use smart cards and 10,000 of those cards have been distributed without charge to residents and entertainment workers in Xuhui District and Pudong, the Shanghai Daily reported Monday.

The effort marks World AIDS Day, Wednesday, and is part of a government drive to make condoms more readily available.

"It is still a pilot move and will be promoted to more regions if it works successfully," said Wei Longgen, an official from the Shanghai Population and Family Planning Commission.

The commission has created 16,000 free condom distributing spots in the city, Xinhua, China's main government-run news agency.

"Among those spots, there are 1,185 centers providing 24-hour service," Wei said. "It is a great convenience for locals."
