The study was done by the British Council, which promotes and teaches English around the world to more than 500,000 people each year. Advertisement Celebrating its 70th anniversary, the council polled to create a list of the most 70 beautiful words, and while mother topped the list, father was not among the other 69 words. By popularity, the following rounded out the top 10 beautiful words: passion, smile, love, eternity, fantastic, destiny, freedom, liberty and tranquility. But sprinkled throughout the list were some other words English speakers might not describe as exactly beautiful. They include lollipop, flip-flop, banana, twinkle, hiccup, hodgepodge, whoops and the expression 'oy.'
