HONG KONG, Nov. 17 (UPI) -- Two dog thieves were arrested in Hong Kong after tossing three pedigree mastiffs out of their getaway van as the owner gave chase, local media said Wednesday.

The dogs' owner, Kwan Wing-hung, called police while pursuing the van in his car, the South China Morning Post reported. The thieves apparently hoped to distract the owner by throwing out the dogs, but he called a friend to look for the dogs while continuing to pursue the van.

The suspects, two men aged 24 and 29, were intercepted by police and arrested. One of the four-month-old dogs was recovered with minor injuries to his hind legs, but the other two remained missing.

The dogs were Neapolitan mastiffs, a rare breed valued at up to $10,000, police said.

A spokeswoman for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said the theft of pet dogs was rare in Hong Kong.
