INDIANAPOLIS, Nov. 17 (UPI) -- Dianne Holmes-Despain of Indianapolis, who advised others about profiting from government loopholes, may have run out of luck in her own case.
Authorities have charged the 51-year-old author and lecturer with stealing about $83,000 from the Social Security Administration.
County Prosecutor Carl Brizzi said the woman fraudulently obtained benefits by claiming an illness left her unable to work, the Indianapolis Star reported.
While collecting benefits, she wrote books and magazine articles and taught continuing education courses at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis, Brizzi said.
"All the time she was trying to keep her true identity secret from Social Security," Brizzi said.
Holmes-Despain was charged with corrupt business influence, theft, welfare fraud, conspiracy to commit welfare fraud and 14 counts of forgery. Her husband, Joel J. Despain, also was arrested Tuesday and charged with conspiracy to commit welfare fraud.
