LEVITTOWN, N.Y., Nov. 16 (UPI) -- Four Long Island, N.Y., teens were arrested and charged with falsely reporting an incident after staging a phony automobile abduction.

Maria Kohler, 18, Michael Oliveri, 17, and Tara Reuman, 19, of Levittown, N.Y., were pulled over by police Sunday afternoon minutes after several motorists placed 911 calls reporting a man in the trunk holding a sign that read, "Help Me Please," the New York Daily News said.

"It was a couple of steps beyond a joke. It was kind of disheartening to see (them) out there doing this," said Nassau County Police Sgt. Jim Skopek.

The man in the trunk, Michael Gregory, 21, was also arrested. He and Kohler were charged with two counts each of falsely reporting an incident when police determined they had conducted a similar prank Saturday in Bellmore.
