NYC landlord amasses 7,313 housing violations

NEW YORK, Nov. 7 (UPI) -- Morris Piller owns 29 residential building in New York City and has amassed 7,313 current housing code violations, said city inspectors.

New York city's Department of Housing Preservation and Development said vermin, lead paint, mold, fungi, leaks, defective wiring, missing smoke detectors and broken windows were among the violations cited to the landlord who lives in a luxury townhouse with an estimated worth $1.4 million, reported the New York Daily News Sunday.

Although he refused to be interviewed by the News about his 3,000 apartments, via an an intermediary, he called himself "a landlord in the middle of the pack (who is) admittedly slow to correct violations and make repairs."

However, he said he is also proud of the many charitable contributions.

The News found Piller charged more than $938 a month for small, one-bedroom apartment in the Bronx -- of which $800 is paid by the government -- in a 90-unit building that has 142 violations as of last month, including mice, leaks, defective plastering, mold, roaches, defective faucets and radiators, broken locks and missing smoke detectors.
