PRAGUE, Czech Republic, Nov. 5 (UPI) -- Former Czech Republic President Vaclav Havel sculpted a cow that fetched more than $36,000 at a charity auction.

Havel's contribution to the Cow Parade was called "Freedom for Cows," a fiberglass sculpture that drew $36,585 at a Southeby's auction, the BBC reported Friday. The former president had hoped South Africa's Nelson Mandela was going to help him with the project, but the civil rights icon was unable to participate for reasons of health.

The auction raised a total of $183,700 for various charitable causes. Since it began in 1998 in Zurich it has raised nearly $13 million for worthy causes.

Havel says his design reflects the color of the free world and the grimness of the totalitarian world.

"The contrast of colors, their interaction with steel bars and with barbed wire hopefully portrays the destiny of many beings that live their miserable lives without freedom."
