RAPID CITY, S.D., Oct. 26 (UPI) -- American Indian activist Russell Means, running for presidency of his tribe, apparently forgot to pay some parking tickets and it interrupted his campaign.

Means, one of two candidates seeking the presidency of the Oglala Sioux Tribe in a Nov. 2 election, was detained by Rapid City, S.D., officers Saturday for failing to appear in federal court a day earlier to deal with some traffic tickets, the Fargo, N.D., Forum reported Tuesday.

The 65-year-old activist was freed on bond three hours later after friends came up with a $510 money order.

"There's no excuse," Means said. "I was just campaigning too hard."

He said he is pleading not guilty to five traffic tickets issued in Badlands National Park earlier this year.
