Georgia town goes nuts over squirrels

WASHINGTON, Ga., Oct. 21 (UPI) -- A small Georgia town east of Atlanta has turned itself into a shooting gallery in an effort to get rid of pesky squirrels.

Officials in Washington, Ga., home to 4,300 humans, say the squirrel population has gotten so out of control they have declared open season on the furry varmints, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reported.

Residents can get $3 hunting licenses, which let them shoot squirrels on their own property between 8:15 a.m. and noon on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Police Chief Mike Davis says the city already tried trapping the squirrels and taking them into the woods, but they just scampered right back into town.

The latest ploy, however, isn't working much better -- at least so far. Davis says only two people have applied for licenses, and in the first week of squirrel hunting season, not a single one had been bagged.
