VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Oct. 6 (UPI) -- Da Kine Smoke and Beverage Shop, a Vancouver cafeteria that sold marijuana besides coffee and cake has closed four months after it opened for business.

The Canadian business, whose owner is now in jail, surrendered its license Tuesday a day before the city hall was to review the certificate, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported.

Da Kine Smoke made headlines last month when police raided the facility. Authorities said the shop was doing $30,000 worth of business daily.

Carol Gwilt, its owner, has been in jail since Sept. 9 on a marijuana trafficking charge. She hopes to be released now that the café is closed, the report said.

Gwilt had said the café limited sales to 28 grams for customers who had to be at least 19 years old, but didn't require doctor's notes.

The shop's supporters said Da Kine had been a milestone in the fight to be able to legally buy and sell pot in the city. They plan to campaign to reopen the place.
