ST. JOHNS, Newfoundland, Sept. 30 (UPI) -- Canadian police say drug addicts in Newfoundland are apparently supporting their habit by stealing and reselling cheese.

Police Sgt. June Layden in St. John's told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. Thursday of one incident in which a man threatened to stab people with a hypodermic needle in a grocery store parking lot this week.

When arrested, he had several blocks of stolen cheese in his possession, she said.

She said supermarket and pizza restaurant employees are reporting a spate of cheese thefts.

"People are coming in and stealing it by blocks," she said.

Big Bite Pizza owner Robert Kourrie said someone broke into his restaurant and stole a case of cheese worth about $200.

The cheese theives resell the booty to other restaurants and use the money to buy drugs, Layden said.
