LINCOLN, Neb., Sept. 21 (UPI) -- Artist George Lundeen used six one-dollar coins to represent Sacagawea in his new Lewis and Clark sculpture at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

"People ask why Sacagawea isn't in the composition," Lundeen said Monday about "On the Trail of Discovery," his new, life-size bronze installation at the school's Center for Great Plains Studies. The sculpture will be publicly unveiled Oct 1.

The main figures in the artwork are explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark, who are accompanied by an American Indian man and child. Lundeen said Sacagawea, the Shoshone woman who served as the explorers' guide and interpreter during their journey, appears in the Indian man's earrings, which were fashioned from several golden dollar coins featuring her portrait.
