BOSTON, Sept. 8 (UPI) -- Sixteen lost paintings have been reunited with a Boston artist who thought they were gone for good.

In October 2002 Isaac Cohen, on his way to have the paintings professionally photographed, absentmindedly placed an envelope containing the works on top of his car and drove off, forgetting them. Realizing what he'd done, Cohen returned to the neighborhood, but the envelope was gone.

"It's a miracle," Cohen told the Boston Globe. "It took over 10 years to finish them. When I lost them ... it was a devastating experience." Cohen created the paintings for a book on Hanukkah.

Graphic artist Benjamin Bryant found the envelope containing the paintings. He and a co-worker put up posters seeking the owner, but no one responded.

Bryant kept the paintings -- once misplacing them himself - and then donated the works to a gallery at a Jewish community center.

Cohen said he was shocked when he saw a photo of one of his lost paintings in the Globe last week, He's scheduled to speak about his work at the gallery Sunday.
