PETALUMA, Calif., Sept. 2 (UPI) -- A California man and his dog were rescued from a well under their house and the rescuing firemen came back the next day to see how they did it.

"We rarely get incidents like this," said Petaluma Fire Capt. Jeff Holden. He plans to use the experience for a confined space rescue training class.

Holden said Turk Black tried to rescue his dog, Snoop, after the animal fell into a well while chasing raccoons under the house early Wednesday, the San Francisco Chronicle said.

Black slid down the 4-foot diameter well, which he had not known was there, to retrieve the dog but couldn't get out. He began slipping down the pipe as he held onto the dog, Holden said.

Firefighters rigged a rope system using a floor beam as an anchor, with only about 2 1/2 feet clearance. Black let go of the dog, slipped a noose under his arms and was hoisted out. He then lassoed the dog and pulled him up.
