Two for one: chicken lays egg within egg

MELBOURNE, Aug. 23 (UPI) -- An Australian egg producer says one of her chickens has laid an egg within an egg, the Australian Broadcasting Corp. reported Monday.

Sue Paff of northeast New South Wales said one of her free-range chickens laid a 4-inch egg, far larger than her chickens typically produce.

"I rolled it around because I thought, 'Oh, it's probably all egg white,' you know, and I thought, 'there's something in there,'" she said.

"Then we peeled this shell back and there was another whole, perfect egg inside and then we cracked that and it was perfect inside as well.

"So it was quite a shock actually ... I don't know how common it is but we've had two."

A University of Sydney poultry scientist said he has only seen such an egg once in his 30-year career.

Professor Tom Scott said if a normal egg goes back up into the chicken's oviduct and egg production begins again, it could result in an egg-within-an-egg.
