Lonely whale seeks out boats as 'family'

VANCOUVER, British Columbia, Aug. 20 (UPI) -- A lonely killer whale in British Columbia's Gold River has been nuzzling up to passing boats -- and the results have been less than friendly.

Luna, an orphaned whale, has been living in the river for several years, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported.

The provincial fisheries department in Vancouver has received numerous reports from fishermen about close calls with Luna, who is apparently rubbing up against boats to make friends.

Sailor Greg Middleton told the CBC Luna tossed his boat and broke the rudder.

"The whale came out of nowhere," he said.

Middleton got his disabled craft ashore and rigged a makeshift rudder, but when he tried to leave, Luna came right back.

Officials tried to reunite Luna with its family, but the First Nation band of Indians blocked the attempts, saying the whale is the embodiment of its dead chief, CBC said.
