OTTAWA, July 22 (UPI) -- Canadian mail officials have convinced a chain of pet stores to stop marketing dog snacks in the shape of letter carriers, the Globe and Mail said Thursday.

The president of Pet Valu Canada, a chain with 290 outlets said the company has decided to stop carrying "Bark Bars" after receiving a letter from the legal department of Canada Post.

Pet Valu president Ed Casey said the letter his company received from Canada Post was courteous and did not threaten legal action.

Canada Post spokesman John Caines said the request was based in part on a recent attack on a female letter carrier in Chatham, Ont., where the woman had part of an ear torn off and her wrists broken by a dog. He said the mailman-shaped biscuits were "in extremely poor taste."

In the United States, some letter carriers reportedly hand out the treats to dogs on their routes.

Casey said there had been no complaints about the product, other than the letter from Canada Post, and no other shape of treat had caused any problems.
