LAGOS, Nigeria, July 19 (UPI) -- A rumor in Nigeria that a cell phone call from "killer numbers" causes death has cell phone users checking the phone number before answering.
The BBC reported Monday the rumor is rampant in Lagos, although the news media has been repeating the fact that death cannot come via a cell phone call.
A list of the alleged killer numbers has been circulated and despite there being no report of anyone dying from a cellular phone call, many people remain superstitious.
The BBC said the current cell phone rumor is reminiscent of a Nigerian rumor a few years ago that a handshake could cause sexual organs to disappear.
