MELBOURNE, May 12 (UPI) -- Australian officials found a 3-foot long alligator living in a putrid pond of a Melbourne area residence, the Herald Sun reported Wednesday.

Police, who also found marijuana plants, hydroponic equipment and illegal knives in the Myrtle Grove home, were preparing charges against some of the house's occupants.

One of four young men living at the house said they kept the 3-year-old alligator as a pet and sometimes let it walk around the lounge room.

He said they fed the alligator mincemeat because it "wouldn't eat anything else we tried."

"We didn't tell many people that we had it, but someone obviously dobbed us in," said the man, who refused to be named.

The alligator, which is native to Florida, was taken to the Melbourne Zoo.
