The Mainichi Daily News reported the 60-year-old woman admitted to the allegations, saying she wanted spending money.

Police said Tsujita collected golf balls from the bottom of the 6-foot-deep lake near the 15th hole at the Sasadaira Country Club in Yamaoka.

Using a waterproof flashlight to find the golf balls Tsujita put the golf balls into a net attached to a floating swimming ring, and by early Saturday had collected 1,554 balls.

The Supreme Court in Japan has ruled lost golf balls are the property of the golf course.
