NEW YORK, April 30 (UPI) -- The Indian immigrant who quit the New York Police Department after being forced to stop wearing his Sikh turban at work wants his job back.

Jasjit Singh Jaggi, 36, told the New York Daily News he wants to rejoin the NYPD, "the most prestigious job a man like me could ask for."

An administrative law judge found the NYPD guilty of religious discrimination when it forced Jaggi to drop his turban and wear a regulation white cap. In a landmark opinion, Judge Donna Merris recommended Jaggi be reinstated and allowed to wear a turban on duty. The city, however, plans to appeal.

Police departments in England and Toronto allow the Sikh turban with uniforms, but there are none with such an accommodation in the United States.
