BATON ROUGE, La., April 14 (UPI) -- A Louisiana mother held off two transvestite carjackers until she was able to get her children to safety, police said.

Meagen Creft, 26, acted fast Tuesday when one of the two suspects pulled a knife and demanded her car outside a day-care center where she works, the Baton Rouge Advocate reported. She refused to surrender her car keys until she could get her children out.

Creft pulled her 13-month-old son from a car seat and her 6-year-old daughter was able to escape on her own before the suspects sped away in her car. The car hit Creft's legs as it exited the parking lot but she wasn't seriously injured.

Ameal Selders Jr., 21, and Curtis Jarvis Jr., 20, were booked on charges of attempted first-degree murder, armed robbery and aggravated second-degree battery. They were arrested about two hours later when an officer spotted the stolen car.

Police Cpl. Don Kelly said the case was unusual because the suspects were apparently willing to take a car even though they knew children were inside.
