LONG ISLAND, N.Y., April 12 (UPI) -- Long Island, N.Y., police Monday tried to determine who was responsible for leaving dead rats crucified to palm frond crosses in a family's yard.

The unidentified homeowner awoke to make the grisly discovery of crucified rats and mice Saturday morning.

A police spokesman told the New York Post investigators are treating it as a "bias" incident, indicating there was a religious factor in the act, timed to coincide with Easter.

A neighbor told the newspaper the family targeted was Christian, but said he couldn't fathom why they in particular were chosen.

"Burning the cross, maybe, but this is bizarre," he said.
