OAK BROOK, Ill., April 9 (UPI) -- Police thought a man dressed as Ronald McDonald may have been casing two Chicago-area restaurants this week but McDonald's says it was the real clown.

The manager of a McDonald's in Braidwood, Ill., called police after a man claiming to be the fast-food chain's corporate mascot showed up unannounced and began greeting customers at a drive-through next to a cash register.

The clown was asked to return to the restaurant's public area.

A short time later, the clown popped at a McDonald's in Coal City, Ill., and mingled with patrons.

McDonald's officials contacted by police said it was all a misunderstanding.

"It was meant to be a fun surprise for customers," spokeswoman Juile Pottebaum told the Chicago Tribune.

A check of the license plates on the clown's van showed it was registered to a McDonald's in Chicago.
