WEST PALM BEACH, Fla., March 25 (UPI) -- A Palm Beach County, Fla., woman is recovering from an alligator bite she suffered while riding in the back of a pickup truck.

Patricia Compton, 65, was bitten by the 9-foot, 8-inch gator, the Palm Beach Post reported Thursday.

She was riding slowly with her legs hanging out the back of the truck through some woods on the way to a family cabin last weekend.

"I thought it was just a log. Then I saw his head, his teeth on my leg. It was vicious," Compton said. Then the gator let go.

Her husband, Jim, stopped the truck to see what had happened. He said the alligator then charged him. He ran back into the truck, and drove her to the nearest hospital.

Officers of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission found the alligator. They said it was covered with scrape marks and appeared to have a broken back.

After they killed it, they said it might have been injured earlier, making it aggressive.
