CHRISTCHURCH, England, March 25 (UPI) -- A British bicyclist splashed by a passing motorist went on a 10-day tire-slashing spree, vandalizing more than 560 cars, a court heard.

With a sharpened screwdriver in hand, Ashley Carpenter struck at vehicles left on the road, in private and public car parks and even in house driveways in Christchurch, the Daily Mirror reported Thursday. He damaged at least 1,728 tires and police said the slow deflation caused by some of the puncture marks could easily have caused serious accidents.

"He said he resented the inconsiderate manner of motorists. He had been nearly knocked off his bike by one and had been splashed by a vehicle driving through a puddle," prosecutor Julia Woodward told magistrates Wednesday. Carpenter was remanded in custody and could face jail time when sentenced next month for damage estimated at a minimum $181,000.

Police launched Operation Cloud to track Carpenter, who struck between Dec. 10 and Dec. 22.

"There has never been this type of offending on this scale and size. We viewed over 500 hours of CCTV footage," Detective Sgt. Mark Monaghan said.
