DUISBURG, Germany, March 19 (UPI) -- A German SWAT team stormed a bank surrounded by 150 police officers in a standoff with a would-be robber Friday only to find their suspect gone.

The German magazine Express reports a masked robber entered the bank through a window before it opened. Armed with a knife, he threatened a 41-year-old female employee and tied up a 51-year-old bank manager and a cleaner.

The untied employee managed to escape, locking the robber in and calling police.

Police responded with a massive 150-officer siege, which included sharpshooters on nearby roofs and special SWAT team officers.

After four tense hours of standoff, the SWAT team stormed the bank, but found only the two tied employees -- no robber.

The robber is thought to have fled out a bank window and is being sought by police.

His success was limited, however. He is believed to have fled without taking any money.
