DETROIT, March 12 (UPI) -- Detroit's parent-teacher association is sending naughty moms and dads to tow yards for refusing to pay up for goodies bought during school cookie sales.

PTA President Karen Newton said six families never turned in the money from cookies, candy and other items sold for a 2002 fund-raiser at David Hicks Elementary School in Inkster, WDIV-TV, Detroit, reported Friday.

"The parents showed up to pick up their orders, took the goods with intention to pay us back in like a two-week time frame, and didn't," Newton said.

After sending several notices in the mail, the PTA decided to take one parent to small claims court where it won a court order to have that parent's vehicle impounded at a tow yard.

After paying the yard -- and the PTA -- the parent regained possession of the vehicle.

The PTA has reportedly made $500 from the effort and plans to go after the rest of the families that owe money.

To avoid having to take drastic measures in the future, the PTA now requires parents to pay for the sale items in advance.
