THORNBURY, England, March 11 (UPI) -- An English gardener digging a fish pond in his garden uncovered a hoard of 20,000 ancient Roman coins, the BBC reported Thursday.

Experts told the BBC the coins could date back to the Fourth Century. They described the priceless discovery as the biggest find of its kind in Britain.

The gardener found the coins crammed into a ceramic pot that crumbled as he dug it out of his garden in Thornbury, Gloucestershire.

A coroner must decide if Ken Allen, the gardener who made the discovery, can keep the treasure.

"This is the most amazing find of treasure to come out of this area for 30 years," said Gail Boyle, from Bristol Museum.

"It was a great surprise and at first I didn't realize what we had found," Allen said. "The pot was perfectly upright, I can't believe that this discovery was only 20 feet from our house."
