SAN DIEGO, March 2 (UPI) -- The Theodor Seuss Geisel U.S. postage stamp that honors the Pulitzer Prize-winning author better known as Dr. Seuss was dedicated in San Diego Tuesday.

"With this stamp, the U.S. Postal Service is pleased to call attention to the very unique creative legacy of one of the world's most beloved authors," said Angelo Wider, manager, finance administration for the Postal Service, who dedicated the stamp at the Geisel Library.

"We are honoring Theodor Seuss Geisel's accomplishments, his life -- and most importantly -- his playful love of learning."

Geisel, born on March 2, 1904, in Springfield, Mass. , worked in advertising when he started selling cartoons under his pen name, Dr. Seuss, his mother's maiden name and his own middle name.

Dr. Seuss authored 44 books for children, typically featuring a story illustrated with drawings of fantastic creatures such as Horton the elephant in "Horton Hatches the Egg," in 1940, and the Grinch in "How the Grinch Stole Christmas!" in 1957.

However, many consider the 1957 "The Cat in the Hat" as his most innovative book.

Geisel died in 1991.
