BROOMFIELD, Colo., Feb. 14 (UPI) -- A man died after he jumped in a partially frozen pond in Broomfield, Colo., in an attempt to save his black Labrador retriever.

The man, whose identity was not released by police, was under water for about 20 minutes, but only 7 feet from the shore. He was pulled out of the eight-foot deep pond by firefighters using poles, the Denver Post reported.

He was taken to St. Anthony Central Hospital in Denver but he could not be revived. Firefighters rescued the dog.

"There are so many of these incidents every year," said Wendy Krajewski, spokeswoman for North Metro Fire Rescue. "Most often, animals survive these incidents; humans don't."

Krajewski said the dog's leash was by the pond's shore, possibly indicating the owner had let his dog run loose in the park.

"Dogs frequently chase ducks or geese into the water," she said. "The owner panics and chases after the dog in the water."

Krajewski recommended that pet owners should call emergency workers who have equipment to rescue the animals safely from icy water.
