CHICAGO, Jan. 21 (UPI) -- Haggis, the Scottish delight of sheep's offal and oatmeal, is about to hit the United States, bigtime.

The concoction, usually trotted out in memory of Scotland's national poet Robert Burns, who wrote a verse about it, is made of the sheep's heart, liver, lung and oatmeal boiled in a sheep's stomach.

Stahly Quality Foods Ltd., will produce the Scottish delicacy at an undisclosed Chicago factory.

Owner Ken Stahly told the Chicago Sun-Times: "There are lots of Scots living in the states, and Scottish food is becoming increasingly popular, so I think the market is definitely big enough to make haggis a success in the U.S. Chicago is an ideal base, because its geographical location is an ideal gateway to the U.S. and Canadian marketplace."

About 300,000 tins are planned for the market, along with a vegetarian variety. Other flavors, including whisky, could appear in the future. Roughly 10 million Americans have Scottish roots. Chicago's Scottish community is becoming increasingly prominent.

However, a November survey revealed a third of Americans visiting Scotland believed haggis an animal they could hunt and catch.
