TAIPEI, Taiwan, Dec. 29 (UPI) -- Taiwan has had a bad month for the Miss Taiwan pageant, with one in serious debt to a loan shark and another with a resume as a bar flirt.
The first embarrassment for the Beauty Development Association, which organizes the pageant, came earlier this month when Miss Taiwan, Liu An-na, went into hiding with her mother to avoid debt collectors seeking $1.2 million, the Taipei Times reported Monday.
On Dec. 14, Liu telephoned the association to say she was safe. She was asked to either hold a news conference to clear the matter up or give up her title.
Liu refused, so Dec. 22 the association stripped Liu of her title and announced it would crown Kao, who had won second place in the Miss Taiwan contest.
But, on Dec. 25, a Chinese-language newspaper wrote that Kao Ching-Hui had once worked as a bar girl in a bar run by her sister. Bar girls are used to bring in and keep business by mingling, drinking and flirting with patrons.
Kao was crowned Sunday and still had her title Monday, the newspaper said.
