ST. LOUIS, Nov. 26 (UPI) -- Americans may prefer big birds for Thanksgiving, but Thanksgiving eve is definitely pizza night.

Faced with a kitchen marathon to meet demand on the national day of overeating, families on the night before the holiday turn to the traditional American alternative to cooking -- ordering pizza, giving pizza joint owners their own reason to give thanks.

"It's one of the best days of the year," Italian restaurant owner Dutch Guidici told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. He runs three restaurants in the region.

While Super Bowl Sunday, New Year's Eve, New Year's Day and even Halloween stand out as obvious pizza days, the night before Thanksgiving ranks among the top five as well, those in the pizza business say.

Domino's Pizza sold 1.2 million pizzas nationwide on Super Bowl Sunday this year, the company reported. But Domino's is counting on turning a tidy profit Wednesday night as well, expecting to sell more than 1 million pizzas -- 50 percent more than is typical for a Wednesday night.
